Wine Wednesday | Collections

For the longest time, i wondered why people collected wine. I met so many people who collected fantastic bottles of wine as a hobby and I really really didn’t get it. “This bottle is too good to be wasted on an ordinary evening”, they would say. And I kept wondering how anyone could buy nice wine to store. So which wine did they drink on normal days then? Bad wine? I really, really didn’t get it. “Wine collectors must be very disciplined people,” I remember thinking. I just couldn’t see myself having a bottle of wine I couldn’t drink. What was the point?

And then one day, a year ago, a good friend of mine brought me some really nice vintages from South Africa that turned me into a collector overnight. Here’s the thing, there are some bottles you won’t find in Uganda, no matter where you look. And that’s enough to turn anyone into a hoarder. There hasn’t (yet) been an occassion special enough for me to open my bottles. I keep remembering that after I open them, I won’t be able to replace them for a while. They’ll be gone! So that’s the story of how I’ve been staring at two fantastic bottles for nearly a year.

I think it’s safe to call myself a budding collector now, yes?

I've got the 2006 and 2012 vintages. Really want to compare them but haven't gotten round to doing so.

Are you a collector? How did you start and what’s in your collection?

Happy wine Wednesday!
